SGPC launches official channel on YouTube, to start telecast from Golden Temple today

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) launched its official YouTube/web channel on Sunday to broadcast gurbani and kirtan (recitation and singing of holy verses) from the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple worldwide. The telecast will begin from Monday morning.

The web channel ‘SGPC Sri Amritsar’ was officially launched after the bhog (concluding ceremony) of Sri Akhand Path Sahib at Gurdwara Shaheed Baba Gurbaksh Singh Ji in the Golden Temple complex. A gurmat samagam (religious congregation) was held at Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib Diwan Hal on this occasion. This channel will be available on YouTube and Facebook.

SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said it’s a historic day as the SGPC fulfils the long-standing demand of the congregation by starting the Gurbani broadcast on its own. “All the rights to broadcast Gurbani from Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib will remain with the SGPC, and no other channel will have this privilege,” said Dhami.

He said the SGPC is also working to establish its own satellite channel.

Regarding the financial aspect, the PTC channel has been authorised to broadcast gurbani on satellite based on popular demand, Dhami informed. The PTC, he said, has agreed to this arrangement and will pay monthly expenses of Rs 12 lakh to a company that SGPC had hired earlier for broadcasting Gurbani on the official YouTube and social media platforms. Last year, PTC had paid more than Rs 16 lakh per month to SGPC as education fund.

Harbhajan Singh, spokesperson for SGPC, clarified that previously the rights of Gurbani live telecast were reserved with PTC. Now, these rights are with the SGPC.

In light of the launch, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami urged the Punjab government to refrain from interfering in SGPC affairs. He said, “SGPC is a body blessed by the Gurus and has always responded strongly to attempts by governments to undermine it. “

Chiding the AAP government in power, Dhami said it should focus on fulfilling promises made to the people, and the Sikh community knows how to handle its own affairs.

Regarding the recent formation of a union by some SGPC employees, Dhami said that it goes against the norms of the Sikh organization. Criticising the Punjab government’s act of registering the union under trade, Dhami said that the SGPC is not a factory or commercial establishment where a trade union can be established.

He asserted that the SGPC employees stand with humanity during difficult times and that some individuals intentionally aim to tarnish the organisation’s management, which the SGPC will not tolerate.
